Abstract

Those patients with prostate cancer who present with metastatic disease have an approximate survival of five years. One of the most feared complications is spinal cord compression, which is considered an oncological emergency. In these patients, it is recommended to act immediately: start steroids, relieve pain, urgently request a magnetic resonance image of the total spine in the first 24 hours, consult a spine surgeon to define the need for decompression, and consider external radiotherapy, since either post-decompression or in conjunction with systemic therapy if the patient is not undergoing surgery. The fundamental objective is to reduce the probability of neurological damage to improve the quality of life of patients.
